Giant Saguaro Cactus
The Saguaro Cactus is an iconic symbol of the American Southwest! These giant cacti can grow up to 40-60 feet tall and live for more than 150 years. In fact, the first branches (arms) often don't appear until they’re around 50-70 years old! The Saguaro's arms help store water, which is essential for survival in the arid desert. Fun fact: a fully hydrated saguaro can weigh over a ton! Their striking white flowers, which bloom in late spring, are the state flower of Arizona and only open at night to be pollinated by bats. The Saguaro also plays a critical role in desert ecosystems, offering shelter and food to various animals, including birds that nest in the cactus’ thick flesh. Despite its tough exterior, the Saguaro is highly sensitive to frost, which can kill the plant. This majestic cactus is a true desert survivor!
