Plant Information
The famous and fascinating Venus Fly Trap forms a hinged trap that typically has a number of little triggers on the inside of each half. The coloration and scent of the open traps attracts their prey. When the same hair trigger is touched twice or another one is touched, the trap quickly slams shut. The cilia, or little fingers on the outside edge of the trap, quickly close and lock together to form unescapable doors. Digestive enzymes secreted within the trap decompose the soft parts of the insect’s body for digestion. The trap will open again in a week or two to capture another meal. Only the soft parts of the victim’s body are consumed, the skeleton shell is removed by rain or wind activity.

These plants developed this ability to cope with the nutrient poor environment they are native too.  As a result of this, it is important to only water them with distilled water and to not apply fertilizer to them. Flytraps are perennials that can live for decades and their traps increase in size each year, when they return after a rather brief cold period.

Mosses are some of the oldest plants on Earth, dating back over 450 million years. They have been around since before the time of dinosaurs!

Mosses are highly efficient at retaining water. Some mosses can hold up to 20 times their dry weight in water, allowing them to survive in arid conditions and rehydrate quickly after dry periods.

Pitcher Plants
Pitcher plants form tube traps that produce a sweet smell and sap on the slippery rim of the trap to attract insects. Insects are enticed to stroll around the rim and if they are not careful, will fall into the narrow tube or vessel. The inside surface of the tube is very waxy, and the victim is usually unable to crawl back up to freedom. The top closes and the pitcher fills up with digestive juices to eat the insect.

Catnip is very easy to grow with our Sprouter! Once they have grown a little, harvest some foliage, crush it up, put in the included linen bag, and watch your cats roll over, purr, and leap with excitement!  The secret is that when you crush the foliage of this herb, it releases an oil that attracts cats.
