Catnip is very easy to grow with our Sprouter! Once they have grown a little, harvest some foliage, crush it up, put in the included linen bag, and watch your cats roll over, purr, and leap with excitement!  The secret is that when you crush the foliage of this herb, it releases an oil that attracts cats. In fact, cats will rub up against the foliage themselves to bruise it and release the scent. You can do this with fresh or dried catnip leaves.

Catnip
Catnip, or Nepeta cataria, is like magic for cats! This herb, a member of the mint family, contains a compound called nepetalactone, which triggers a euphoric reaction in about 70% of cats. When they sniff or chew on catnip, they might roll around, purr, leap into the air, or even drool in sheer excitement! Interestingly, this euphoric reaction lasts only about 10-15 minutes before the cat becomes immune to its effects for a short while. But it's not just for cats—humans have used catnip for centuries as a mild herbal remedy for calming teas and even to treat headaches. The famous Venus Fly Trap, a native of coastal North and South Carolina, forms a hinged trap that typically has three little triggers on the inside of each half. When an insect touches one of the triggers, the plant gets ready to spring into action. When the same or another one is touched, the trap quickly slams shut. Digestive enzymes secreted by glands within the trap decompose the insect’s body. The trap will open again in a week or two to capture another meal.

Sundews
Sundews produce leaves with tentacles that produce a very sticky glue-like substance. They glisten in sunlight and are called “The Jewels of the Plant World.” Insects are attracted to the tentacles and quickly become stuck. Adjoining tentacles bend and attach to the body of the unlucky bug. Digestive enzymes eventually absorb the nutrients from the insect, thus nourishing the plant.

These plants developed this ability to cope with the nutrient poor environment they are native too.  As a result of this, it is important to only water them with distilled or collected rain water and to not apply fertilizer to them. Flytraps are perennials that can live for decades and their traps increase in size each year, when they return after a rather brief cold period.

Pitcher Plants
Pitcher plants form tube traps that produce a sweet smell and sap on the slippery rim of the trap to attract insects. Insects are enticed to stroll around the rim and if they are not careful, will fall into the narrow tube or vessel. The inside surface of the tube is very waxy, and the victim is usually unable to crawl back up to freedom. The top closes and the pitcher fills up with digestive juices to eat the insect.

Plant Information

All About Aloe
